For the first time in history, a woman has been appointed as the head of British intelligence. Blaise Metreweli, 47, will take over the position from the current president, Richard Moore, who will step down in the fall.
The UK has appointed a woman to head the foreign intelligence agency MI6 (Secret Intelligence Service) for the first time in its history. Blaise Metreweli will take over from the current president Richard Moore, who will step down in the fall.
TO BE KNOWN BY THE CODE NAME "C"
Blaise Metreweli has served in operational roles in the Middle East and Europe for many years since joining MI6 in 1999. Currently the agency's chief technology officer, known as "Q," the 47-year-old Metreweli will be referred to by the code name "C," which is specific to MI6 heads, after taking over the position.
“SHE WILL LEAD AGAINST UNPRECEDENTED THREATS”
Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed his confidence that Metreweli would lead against the unprecedented threats facing the country in a statement made at the G7 Summit in Canada.
A FIRST IN HISTORY
Metreweli, who studied anthropology at the University of Cambridge, has previously held senior positions in the domestic intelligence service MI5. With this appointment, MI6 will be led by a woman for the first time, joining other British intelligence agencies like MI5 and GCHQ.
