The General Manager of ITU MATAM, Prof. Dr. Cenk Yaltırak, made striking statements regarding the expected major earthquake in Istanbul. Yaltırak stated that a significant earthquake will occur in the Marmara region by 2065 at the latest, saying, "This process could start as early as tomorrow." He also drew attention to the risk of a tsunami.
The Director of the Marmara Region Earthquake Research and Application Center (MATAM) at Istanbul Technical University, Prof. Dr. Cenk Yaltırak, made evaluations about the expected major earthquake in the Marmara region during a program he attended after the tremor that occurred in Istanbul at 19:57.
"WILL OCCUR BY 2065"
Yaltırak emphasized that the major earthquake in the Marmara region is approaching, stating that it is predicted to occur by the latest 2065. He expressed that the highest risk is on the East Marmara fault, where the great disaster of 1509 also occurred. He also pointed out the possibility of multiple fault lines breaking simultaneously, stating that in this case, an earthquake of 7.8 magnitude could occur.
"THE EARTHQUAKE COULD HAPPEN TOMORROW"
Yaltırak noted that the second phase of the earthquake cycles in the Marmara region has been reached, stating that the likelihood of a major earthquake occurring in the next 40 years has increased. Yaltırak warned that the process could start at any moment, saying, "This does not mean we should lie down until 2065. It could happen tomorrow."
TSUNAMI RISK
On the other hand, Prof. Dr. Yaltırak announced that 18 different underwater landslides have been detected in the Sea of Marmara, stating that if a major earthquake triggers these landslides, the risk of a tsunami could also come to the agenda.
