A major step is being taken to reduce the prices of products in chain supermarkets across Turkey, which number around 55,000. According to the new project, a "Republic Corner" will be established in 10-15% of each supermarket, and the products will be provided directly by the government. Supermarkets will purchase the products from the warehouses opened by the government, eliminating the intermediary chain. Prices will remain fixed across all provinces.
Due to the recent rigidity in food inflation, new formulas aimed at reducing product prices are coming to the agenda. The annual food inflation rate, which stands at a high level of 27.95%, is challenging consumers' purchasing power, while steps that can be taken against exorbitant prices are being discussed. The Cumhur Reyonu Project stands out as the formula for achieving success in the fight against food inflation.
A CUMHUR REYONU CORNER WILL BE OPENED
The new model aims to increase the accessibility of basic food items by creating a lower-priced area for certain products in chain supermarkets with more than 55,000 branches across Turkey. According to a report in Yeni Şafak, a Cumhur Reyonu corner will be opened in 10-15% of each supermarket as part of the project. Products will be provided directly by the government. Prices will be fixed and state-labeled across Turkey. Sales will be conducted at supermarket checkouts, and a government inspection officer will oversee the process. Supermarkets will be given a symbolic operating profit.
STATE WAREHOUSES WILL BE ESTABLISHED
Within the framework of this project, state warehouses will be established in metropolitan areas and regions. Supermarket corners, market vendors, and food factories will purchase products from the warehouses opened by the government. All products will be distributed from a single center. The intermediary chain will be eliminated. Products will be sold at prices close to their cost. If necessary, prices will be reduced with government subsidies. Private supermarkets will also have to lower their prices. The food security of low-income citizens will be strengthened. Food factories and market vendors will serve the public with affordable products. The government will take on the role of the 'sixth largest supermarket' in the market.
PRICE STABILITY WILL BE ENSURED FOR 150 BASIC PRODUCTS
To ensure that the products in the cheap sections are even cheaper, government subsidies need to be provided, the implementation needs to be widespread, and special incentives should be offered to companies to increase voluntary compliance. By including chain supermarkets with a wide branch network in almost every part of Turkey in the implementation, price stability can be achieved for 100-150 basic products that citizens consume the most, such as flour, sugar, oil, legumes, and basic vegetables and fruits. A single price will be applied nationwide, as in the case of pharmacies. With the implementation of this model, it is aimed to curb the price increases in the food group, which has a significant share of 24.97% in the basket of the Turkish Statistical Institute.
