"A SHAMEFUL SURRENDER"

According to a statement from the Israeli Prime Minister's Office, Netanyahu claimed that the recognition of Palestine as a state by Western countries during the 80th United Nations (UN) General Assembly was "a shameful surrender." Challenging the international community, Netanyahu stated, "There will be no State of Palestine," asserting that the recognition decision of those countries "would not bind Israel in any way."

The statement from the Israeli Prime Minister's Office was released just hours before Netanyahu was set to depart for the U.S. to address the UN General Assembly.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Luxembourg, Belgium, Andorra, France, Malta, Monaco, and San Marino announced that they recognized the State of Palestine at the High-Level International Conference on Finding a Solution to the Palestinian Issue and Implementing the Two-State Solution, organized under the leadership of France and Saudi Arabia within the United Nations (UN).

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and Portuguese Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel also announced their recognition of the State of Palestine.

Since the declaration of its establishment by Yasir Arafat in 1988, the number of countries recognizing the State of Palestine among the 193 UN member states has risen to 157. The Vatican, which is not a UN member, also recognizes the State of Palestine.
