Due to heart disease, the Deputy Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) and DEM Party Istanbul Deputy Sırrı Süreyya Önder, who fought for his life for 18 days, has passed away. The ceremony held for Önder at the Atatürk Cultural Center (AKM) was attended by CHP Chairman Özgür Özel, TBMM Deputy Speaker and MHP Istanbul Deputy Celal Adan, Istanbul Governor Davut Gül, Minister of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Nuri Ersoy, DEM Party Van Deputy Pervin Buldan, DEM Party member Ahmet Türk, Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Deputy Mayor Nuri Aslan, numerous deputies from various parties, some artists, and citizens.

His brother Ali Fuat Önder, in his speech at the ceremony, stated: "This blood, this pain needs to stop in this country, I have no property, I want to leave a livable country for Ceren," he said. When Önder's funeral was brought from the Zincirlikuyu Mosque Mortuary to the AKM, his daughter Ceren Önder Kandemir and brother Ali Fuat Önder shed tears at the head of the coffin.
THE LIFE OF SIRRI SÜREYYA ÖNDER
Sırrı Süreyya Önder is from Adıyaman, born in 1962, and attended primary and secondary school in Adıyaman. He won a place at Ankara University Faculty of Political Sciences but could not complete his education due to the military coup on September 12, 1980.
Önder, who was sentenced to 12 years in prison for participating in anti-coup protests in Ankara, spent 7 years in prison.
In addition to being a film director, screenwriter, and actor, Önder also worked as a columnist for various newspapers. He won the Best Film Award at the 2007 International Adana Golden Boll Film Festival with the film "Beynelmilel," for which he wrote the screenplay and co-directed with Muharrem Gülmez.
Önder, who was elected as a deputy for Istanbul in the 24th term and for Ankara in the 25th and 26th terms, was part of the HDP delegation that participated in the İmralı negotiations during the "solution process" from 2013 to 2015.
Önder, who received a 3 year and 6 month prison sentence for propaganda of a terrorist organization, was released in 2019.
In the 2023 general elections, Önder was elected as a deputy for Istanbul in the 28th term from the DEM Party. He served as the Deputy Chairman of the TBMM Presidency in the 24th term and as a member of the Constitutional Commission in the 25th and 26th terms. Önder, who was part of the delegation formed on behalf of the DEM Party in the İmralı negotiations, was serving as the Deputy Speaker of the TBMM.
Önder is a father of one child.
