The whole world turned its eyes to the U.S.-Russia summit between President Donald Trump and President Vladimir Putin taking place in Alaska.
CRITICAL SUMMIT LASTED 3 HOURS
The much-debated meeting began at approximately 22:22 Turkish time. The critical summit between the two leaders lasted about 3 hours. A joint press conference by the two leaders is expected.
"OUR COUNTRY WANTS THE WAR IN UKRAINE TO END"
After the summit concluded, the two leaders faced the cameras. In statements made here, Russian President Putin said, "We are going through some tough times this time. This is the hardest period we have experienced since the Cold War. Eventually, we need to develop these relations. We have met several times. We are in constant communication. One of the key points here was the situation in Ukraine. President Trump wants to mediate on the Ukraine issue. The situation in Ukraine stems from our security threats. Our country has sincere feelings to end this war. However, to reach a long-term solution here, we need to get to the root of the conflict. We also want Ukraine's security. My hope is to reach a conclusion to ensure peace in Ukraine. We do not want to make agreements that will undermine the developments here behind closed doors.
I want to thank Trump. We had a productive meeting. We also want to reach an agreement regarding Ukraine. Trump says, "If I had been president in 2022, this war would not have happened."
"THERE IS NO AGREEMENT AT THE MOMENT"
Donald Trump stated: "I believe we have taken important steps today. We had a very constructive meeting. We agreed on many important issues. There is no agreement at the moment. I will talk to NATO. I will convey what I discussed with Zelensky. We have a great relationship with President Putin."
PUTIN BECAME THE FIRST RUSSIAN LEADER TO VISIT ALASKA
In the past, U.S. leaders such as Nikita Khrushchev, Leonid Brezhnev, and Mikhail Gorbachev from the USSR, as well as Boris Yeltsin and Dmitry Medvedev from Russia, visited the U.S., but Putin made history as the first Russian leader to visit Alaska. Putin's visit to New York in 2015 to attend the United Nations (UN) General Assembly is considered his last visit to the U.S.
WHAT HAPPENED?
The period leading up to the critical summit was also eventful. U.S. President Trump, just hours before the meeting, commented on the upcoming U.S.-Russia summit in Alaska in an interview with Fox News. Trump stated that he was on his way to meet with Putin and believed the meeting would go well.
Evaluating the possibility of a disagreement during the meeting, Trump said, "If things don't go well, I will quickly return home. I will leave. I want to see a ceasefire; if I don't see it today, I won't be happy. If my meeting with Putin doesn't go well, I will leave."
