Some Russian troops on the Dnipro River in Ukraine are completely isolated from other Russian forces and have died from hunger and thirst.

After Kherson was recaptured by Ukraine in November 2022, the Dnipro River became a new front line. The right bank of the river is under Ukrainian control, while the low and flood-prone left bank is in the hands of Russia.

The situation is a deadly trap for Russian soldiers stranded on the swampy islands in the middle of the river. According to Ukrainian intelligence, approximately 5,100 Russian soldiers have died since January. Some soldiers died in Ukrainian attacks, while others perished from hunger due to the lack of food and drink.

Colonel Oleksandr Zavtonov from the Ukrainian Marine Corps said:

"This is a death zone for Russian soldiers. They have nowhere to hide."

Some trapped soldiers are forced to drink water from the river when they cannot find food and water. Video footage shows soldiers trying to escape in small boats, camouflaged among reeds and swamps. However, most are spotted and targeted by Ukrainian drones.

In one video, Russian soldiers attempting to escape by boat are seen camouflaging themselves with mud and reeds. But shortly after, a suicide drone hits the boat, and the soldiers are killed.

Oksana Kuzan from the Ukrainian Security and Cooperation Center stated that Russian troops in the delta are facing shortages of food, ammunition, and reinforcements. Covert crossings and infiltration attempts with small groups are emerging as a new tactic not seen at the beginning of the war.

While the islands in the delta provide advantages for small reconnaissance and communication operations, soldiers can easily be targeted due to the low and open terrain.

In summary, the Dnipro delta has become a death trap for Russian soldiers and a strategic observation point for Ukraine.
