A boat with over 100 passengers capsized in Niger State, Nigeria. Sixty people lost their lives in the sinking, and ten others were injured. The head of the Borgu local government area noted that the condition of the injured is serious, stating, "The numbers are continuously rising."

At least 60 people lost their lives and 10 were injured as a result of a capsized boat in Niger State, Nigeria. Authorities reported that the boat was carrying more than 100 passengers and the incident occurred while traveling from Tungan Sule in the Malale area to Dugga. It was noted that the boat capsized after hitting a submerged tree trunk near the village of Gausawa in the Borgu Local Government Area.

"THE NUMBER IS CONTINUALLY RISING"

Borgu local government area chairman Abdullahi Baba Ara stated on Wednesday, "The number of people who lost their lives in the boat accident has risen to 60. The number is continually rising." Ara noted that the condition of 10 individuals is serious and mentioned that many people are still unaccounted for.

The Niger State Emergency Management Agency stated that search and rescue operations are ongoing with emergency personnel and local divers.

MAJORITY OF THE DEAD ARE WOMEN AND CHILDREN

Shagumi area chairman Sa'adu Inuwa Muhammad expressed that there were more than 100 people on the boat and that the majority of the deceased were women and children. Boat accidents in Nigeria are often caused by overloading, adverse weather conditions, and operational errors.
