The suspect, who introduced herself as Mine D., an investment specialist from a well-known investment firm based in Istanbul, contacted businessman I.D., who lives in Ayvalık. The suspect stated that they would implement a 45-day investment program and promised a 78% profit during this process. I.D. accepted the offer because the suspect presented herself as an employee of a well-known firm. Following this, another suspect, who introduced himself as 'Cengiz', began to provide I.D. with so-called consultancy services. The suspects sent I.D. a link to an application, stating that he could track his investments from there. Throughout the day, I.D. monitored his money through the application and thought he was making a profit.
THEY USED ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
Believing he was making an investment, I.D. transferred a total of 10 million lira to two different bank accounts over the course of about a week. The suspects, who were in constant contact with I.D., also used artificial intelligence to gain the victim's trust. The suspect who introduced himself as 'Cengiz' sent photos generated by artificial intelligence to I.D., pretending they were of himself. After a week, I.D. wanted to withdraw the money he thought he had earned, but communication with the other party suddenly ceased. When I.D. called the firm, he realized he had been defrauded when they stated that they did not provide such a service.
"PLANNED AND SYSTEMATIC FRAUD"
I.D. filed a criminal complaint through his lawyer Şenay Geçkil. Lawyer Geçkil stated, "Our client was contacted by individuals who presented themselves as representatives of a well-established investment firm based in Istanbul and was convinced to invest with promises of high returns. However, after the commitments made were not fulfilled, communication was cut off, and no official information regarding the investment process was shared, it became clear that the incident was an organized and professional fraud activity. The individuals in question are part of a criminal organization that acts in a planned and systematic manner. Based on the information and documents at hand, it has been assessed that these individuals are members of a criminal organization that operates in a planned, organized, and professional manner. We have immediately initiated a comprehensive legal process regarding the incident. A criminal complaint has been filed with the Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, and a request for a criminal investigation has been made regarding qualified fraud and organized crime related to the offenses committed," he said.
Emphasizing that the public should be cautious against such frauds, Geçkil stated, "All receipts related to our client's money transfers, call recordings, and other digital evidence have been submitted to the relevant authorities. Necessary applications have been made to the relevant banks and the Financial Crimes Investigation Board (MASAK) for tracking the bank accounts to which the money was sent and for blocking transactions. All criminal and legal processes regarding the individuals in question are being meticulously carried out, and we will continue our legal struggle to remedy our client's victimization and to bring criminal groups operating with similar methods to justice. It is of great importance for the public to be vigilant against such fraudulent activities," he said.
