The penalty for a 23-year-old individual who stole copper cables from a transformer station in Şanlıurfa, leaving 5,177 subscribers without electricity for a long time, has been determined. The person, who caused damages amounting to 1 million Turkish Lira, was sentenced to 8 years and 4 months in prison in the trial.
On October 2, 2024, a theft incident occurred at the transformer center providing energy to the Evren Industrial Site and Akabe TOKİ housing in Şanlıurfa. M.F. (23) broke in with a crowbar and stole copper cables from the transformer building. The damage was determined to be 1 million lira.
5,177 SUBSCRIBERS WERE LEFT WITHOUT ELECTRICITY
Additionally, due to the theft incident, 5,177 subscribers were left without electricity for a long time. Following the incident, the electricity distribution company filed a criminal complaint through its lawyers. A lawsuit was filed against M.F., who was identified and captured through security camera footage.
HE WAS SENTENCED TO 8 YEARS IN PRISON
The detained defendant, charged with "damaging public property" and "qualified theft," appeared before the judge today at the trial's verdict hearing. The defendant was sentenced to 2 years and 1 month for "damaging public property" and 6 years and 3 months for "qualified theft," totaling 8 years and 4 months in prison.
"IT CREATES SERIOUS SECURITY RISKS"
On the other hand, officials from the distribution company emphasized that interventions in energy infrastructure not only cause financial damage but also endanger the safety of citizens' lives and property. In a statement, it was said, "Such interventions in the network disrupt the uninterrupted supply of energy and create serious security risks. Therefore, no intervention should be made to the energy infrastructure for any purpose."
