After Hezbollah officially announced its participation in the war with attacks against Israel, Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam declared the organization's military activities "illegal," requested the surrender of its weapons, and announced that Hezbollah's role should be limited to the political sphere.
In a period of uncertainty regarding the war between the US-Israel and Iran, a striking diplomatic and security development has emerged from Lebanon. The Lebanese government has described Hezbollah's military activities as "illegal actions" and has called for the organization to surrender its weapons, urging it to limit its role solely to the political sphere.
"WE ARE PROHIBITING MILITARY ACTIVITIES" Prime Minister Nawaf Salam emphasized in his statement that the government does not accept any military action being carried out outside the legitimate institutions of the state, stating, "We are prohibiting Hezbollah's military activities and limiting its role to the political sphere. We demand that military institutions implement this."
"NEGOTIATIONS SHOULD BE RESUMED" Salam also renewed their commitment to the ceasefire reached with Israel in 2024 and their determination to restart negotiations. These statements reflect an entirely new attitude aimed at strengthening the principle of the state's monopoly on arms.
HEZBOLLAH ANNOUNCED ITS PARTICIPATION IN THE WAR TODAY However, this call has shaken the balances in the war: Hezbollah, which operates in Lebanon, had recently announced extensive attacks against Israel and officially declared its participation in the war. Hezbollah claimed that it targeted the Mišmar al-Karmel missile defense facility belonging to the Israeli army with qualified missiles and drones, asserting that this was "legitimate defense." The clashes were met with retaliatory strikes from Israel, and it was reported that the number of casualties had reached dozens.
Prime Minister Nawaf Salam EMPHASIS ON STATE MONOPOLY AND CONTROL OF ARMS This new stance of the Lebanese government aims to end Hezbollah's armed presence being outside the control of the state.
