A disturbing attack from Russia! The brink of a nuclear crisis has been averted.

Due to Russia's attack, there was a power outage in Chernobyl for three hours, and the systems that prevent radiation became inoperable. Emergency generators were activated to regain control, and a potentially major nuclear disaster was averted at the last moment.

The Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant, which was the scene of the world's largest nuclear crisis, still poses a radiation threat to humanity despite the years that have passed. The "metal sarcophagus" surrounding the plant, also known as the New Safety Shield, prevents the release of radiation into the environment with its filtration systems. However, Russia's recent attack has once again reminded us of the shadow of the 1986 disaster.

ELECTRIC SYSTEMS TARGETED

Russia targeted the electrical infrastructure of the shield surrounding Chernobyl with artillery fire. The protection systems were disabled for more than three hours due to the strikes on the transformers. The United Nations Nuclear Regulatory Agency announced that the protective structure was left without electricity and that the system was maintained by emergency generators.

"ON THE BRINK OF A GREAT DISASTER"

Ukrainian officials prevented a possible leak with a rapid intervention. No increase in radiation levels was recorded. However, officials emphasized that this attack has the potential to "turn into a global disaster."

HARSH RESPONSE FROM ZELENSKY

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated in his announcement: "Russia's attack on our energy facilities in Slavutych caused a disruption lasting more than three hours at Chernobyl."

Zelensky noted that the attack also put the New Safety Shield, which ensures the containment of reactor four remnants and radioactive dust, at risk.

PREVIOUSLY ATTACKED

Ukrainian authorities reminded that the shield was damaged in a drone attack carried out by Russia last February, but there was no increase in radiation levels at that time.
