In the trial set to begin this month at the Vannes court, the surgeon will face more than 100 charges of rape and over 150 charges of sexual assault. He had previously been sentenced to 15 years in prison in another case.
The investigation revealed that authorities missed numerous opportunities to prevent the crimes. Despite warnings from the FBI and complaints from hospital staff, he was allowed to continue his duties.
Le Scouarnec, who was arrested in 2017 for the rape of a 6-year-old neighbor, had child-sized sexual toys and over 300,000 images of abuse seized from his home. His diaries revealed that he described himself as "happy to be a pedophile."
The surgeon, who worked in hospitals across four different regions of France, faces up to 20 years in prison for aggravated rape.
