The Silopi Greenhouse Organized Agricultural Zone (OTB), rising in a strategic location adjacent to the Habur Border Gate in Şırnak's Silopi district, draws attention as a harbinger of the agricultural revolution.
WILL PROVIDE EMPLOYMENT FOR A THOUSAND PEOPLE Şırnak's Director of Agriculture and Forestry, Oktay Sezgin, stated that the greenhouses to be established on an enormous area of 946 decares will provide employment for a thousand people, 75% of whom will be women. Sezgin expressed that the project will not only revitalize the local economy but will also serve as an export gateway to the markets of Iraq and Syria, indicating that local production will rise from 10% to 40%. He emphasized that the infrastructure works in the Greenhouse Organized Agricultural Zone planned to be established on 946 decares of land are nearing completion, saying, "The infrastructure works in the Silopi Greenhouse Organized Agricultural Zone (OTB) Project are about to be completed. We have embarked on this project with the aim of investment, development, and employment in our province with greenhouses to be established on 946 decares of land. Approximately a thousand people will be employed here, and 75% of this will be female employment in this project," he said.
"VERY STRATEGIC LOCATION DUE TO ITS PROXIMITY TO THE IRAQ-SYRIA MARKET" Sezgin noted that the Greenhouse OTB, located next to Habur, will produce value-added products with high export potential, stating, "The Greenhouse OTB area is in a very strategic location due to its proximity to the Habur Border Gate and the Iraq-Syria market. The agricultural products we will produce in this region have high export potential and will provide value-added products to our region. It will guide and lead employment and economic development. In our project, we will offer job opportunities to the youth and women of our province. With the realization of this project, vegetable cultivation in our region will be made available for consumption in both our province and the surrounding provinces," he said.
INFRASTRUCTURE WORKS WILL BE COMPLETED BY THE END OF THE YEAR Sezgin announced that the infrastructure works of the project will be completed by the end of 2025, stating, "The infrastructure construction process of the Greenhouse OTB is ongoing and will be completed before the end of 2025. With the completion of the infrastructure works by the end of the year, the allocation process for our entrepreneurs and greenhouse investors will begin, and we will start greenhouse installations within 2026," he said.
Sezgin stated that Şırnak is strategically located for agricultural product production and that both the climatic and geographical conditions are suitable for greenhouse cultivation, saying, "Our province is quite strategic in terms of agricultural production. Our climate and geographical conditions are suitable for greenhouse cultivation. The Greenhouse OTB area we will establish in Silopi will offer strong investment, production, employment, and development opportunities for all of us. With the announcement of this project, our farmers have attracted the attention of entrepreneurs in the region and have created excitement. The completion of the project will strongly support the development of the region," he said.
"CITIZENS WILL QUICKLY ACCESS FRESH, QUALITY, AND RELIABLE FOOD WITH LOCAL PRODUCTION" Sezgin conveyed that the Greenhouse OTB Project is expected to make significant contributions to local production, stating that local production will increase from 10% to 40%, "In Şırnak, local production meets approximately 10% of its vegetable needs. This is a narrow scope and short-term. It is met with vegetable production that occurs in the autumn and spring periods. Our consumers in the region, our citizens procure their vegetable needs from provinces like Adana and Mersin. With the establishment of the Greenhouse OTB Project in our province, a strong production will take place locally. In this way, we will be able to supply approximately 40% of our province's needs from the products produced in the Greenhouse OTB area. With local production, our citizens will quickly access fresh, quality, and reliable food," he expressed.
