A man who sexually assaulted his neighbor, whom he claimed was in a relationship with his wife, was sentenced to 52.5 years in prison.

In Kocaeli's Izmit district, Halil Zorlutuna, who was tried for beating his neighbor M.Y. with a baseball bat, claiming he had an affair with his wife, and for sexually assaulting him, recording the moments, and extorting M.Y. to transfer his car to his own wife, received a heavy sentence from the court along with his wife F.Z. and their neighbor Ümit Y. The detained defendant Halil Zorlutuna was sentenced to 52.5 years for 7 separate crimes, while Ümit Y. was sentenced to 31 years, 7 months, and 15 days for 5 separate crimes. F.Z., who was tried without detention, was sentenced to 8 years, 3 months, and 22 days in prison for 2 separate crimes, and it was decided to impose a travel ban.

The incident occurred in August 2022 in the Yenidoğan neighborhood of Izmit. Halil Zorlutuna suspected that his wife F.Z. was cheating on him and read the messages on her phone. He saw sexual content messages between his wife and their neighbor M.Y. Upon this, Halil Zorlutuna made a plan with another neighbor, Ümit Y. Halil Zorlutuna sent a message to M.Y. from his wife's phone, inviting him to their home. Meanwhile, he and neighbor Ümit Y. hid in a room. When M.Y. went to the bedroom, Halil Zorlutuna entered the room with a toy gun. Halil Zorlutuna beat M.Y. with a baseball bat in the room. Zorlutuna then sexually assaulted M.Y. and recorded the moments. Later, he used the recorded sexual assault footage to blackmail M.Y. into transferring his car to his wife F.Z. He also took jewelry worth 21,000 lira belonging to M.Y.'s wife. After the incidents, M.Y. went to the police station to report the situation and filed a complaint against Halil Zorlutuna, his wife F.Z., and neighbor Ümit Y. Following the complaint, Halil Zorlutuna was arrested, while the others were released to be tried without detention.

"I ACCEPT THE PUNISHMENT I WILL RECEIVE"

A case was opened against the suspects for 'Robbery, sexual assault, blackmail, deprivation of liberty, violation of privacy, and injury with a weapon' at the Kocaeli 3rd High Criminal Court. The final hearing of the case was held. During the hearing, detained defendant Halil Zorlutuna attended along with Ümit Y., who was arrested in the previous hearing. The complainant M.Y. requested the heaviest punishment for the defendants, while defendant Ümit Y. denied the accusations. Ümit Y. stated, "I never harmed M.Y., I did not slap him. Halil asked me to record a video to show his wife what kind of person M.Y. is. I also did not damage M.Y.'s property." Halil Zorlutuna said, "I accept the punishment I will receive, I regret what I did."

THE COURT ANNOUNCED ITS DECISION

The court panel decided to sentence detained defendant Halil Zorlutuna to 19 years and 6 months for 'sexual assault', 2 years, 7 months, and 15 days for 'intentional injury', 8 years, 5 months, and 7 days for 'deprivation of liberty', 14 years for 'robbery', 5 years and 2,400 TL for 'fraud', 3 years for 'violation of privacy', and a fine of 1,340 TL for 'insult'. The panel sentenced detained defendant Ümit Y. to 14 years for 'robbery', 6 years for 'deprivation of liberty', 5 years and 2,400 TL for 'fraud', 4 years for 'violation of privacy', and 2 years, 7 months, and 15 days for 'intentional injury'. Non-detained defendant F.Z. was sentenced to 7 years for 'robbery' and 1 year, 3 months, and 22 days for 'intentional injury'. Additionally, the panel decided to impose a travel ban on F.Z.
