Tens of thousands of people took to the streets in Tehran for Iran's religious leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was reported to have been killed in a joint attack by the U.S. and Israel. A massive crowd was seen at one of the capital's symbolic points, Enghelab Square, as the people chanted slogans of "Death to America."
The Iranian state television announced that the country's 37-year religious leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, lost his life in an attack organized by the USA and Israel. Following the announcement, tens of thousands of people took to the streets in the capital, Tehran.
One of Tehran's symbolic points, Enghelab Square, quickly filled up. Aerial footage showed a crowd of hundreds of thousands filling the square and surrounding streets.
"DEATH TO AMERICA" SLOGANS ARE CHANTED
As the crowd grew every hour, slogans of "Death to America" rose in the square. Iranians gathered in the square carrying photos of Khamenei. Moments of the crowd mourning and shedding tears were captured on camera. While a deep atmosphere of mourning prevailed in the streets of Tehran, it was observed that the public was filled with anger and concern.
40-DAY NATIONAL MOURNING DECLARED
Following Khamenei's death, a 40-day national mourning was declared across the country. A decision for a 7-day official holiday covering public institutions and schools was made. Flags were lowered to half-mast, and entertainment programs were canceled. While security measures were increased in the capital, it was reported that crowds continued to gather in squares in many cities, especially in Tehran.
