Spanish Prime Minister Sanchez reacted to Israel and the US by saying, "This war is a huge mistake and completely illegal." The Portuguese Prime Minister Montenegro, who made a joint statement with Sanchez, conveyed the message, "We stand with Turkey."
After the 36th Spain-Portugal Intergovernmental Summit held in Huelva, southern Spain, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro held a joint press conference. The increasing tensions in the Middle East following the attacks by the USA and Israel on Iran were also on the agenda during the meeting.
"THIS WAR IS A THREAT TO WORLD PEACE"
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez expressed deep concern about the developments in the region, stating that the attacks on Iran were a major mistake. Sanchez emphasized that the war would have global consequences, not just regional ones. He stated, "This war is a very big mistake and completely illegal," expressing the need to adhere to international law. He noted that the war is raising oil and gas prices, causing suffering among the people in the region, and that its economic effects would be felt worldwide. Sanchez emphasized that Spain stands by international law and mentioned that a large portion of the public opinion in the country is also against the war.
A FRIGATE WILL BE SENT TO THE EASTERN MEDITERRANEAN
Sanchez also announced that Spain will send the frigate named "Cristobal Colon" to the Eastern Mediterranean. He stated that the frigate will be present in the region for protection, rescue, defense, and collective security missions.
PORTUGAL: THREATS ARE NOT A SOLUTION
Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro spoke about the trade threats from US President Donald Trump towards Spain, stating, "Threats are not a solution."
Montenegro stated that despite the human rights violations and nuclear program of the Iranian regime, they believe that tensions in the region should be reduced, expressing that diplomacy and negotiation are the only solutions.
"WE STAND BY TURKEY" MESSAGE
Montenegro, stating that Portugal acts in harmony with the European Union, NATO, and the United Nations, mentioned that they will continue to show solidarity with allied countries, just as they support the Greek Cypriot Administration. He also emphasized that Turkey is an allied and friendly country, expressing that they stand by Turkey.
As part of the summit, the governments of the two countries signed various cooperation agreements in the fields of combating climate change, civil protection, emergency response, promoting healthy eating, competitiveness, consumer rights, and labor rights and social policies.
