For the first time in 144 years, something new will happen in Bulgaria. The requirement to display dual prices during the euro adoption process will end on August 8, 2026. Starting August 9, prices for products and services will only be shown in euros, while businesses may use the lev equivalent solely for informational purposes. Authorities will continue their inspections against unfair price increases and incorrect currency conversions.
The period requiring prices in Bulgaria to be displayed in both levs and euros will end on August 8, 2026. This will mark the completion of another important stage in the country's transition to the euro.
Bulgaria switched from the lev, used for 144 years, to the euro on January 1, 2026, and the use of the lev has completely ceased. The dual pricing practice was implemented temporarily to help consumers adapt to the new currency and to prevent unfair price increases during the exchange rate transition.
LABELS WILL CHANGE FROM AUGUST 9
The new period will begin on August 9. From this date, sellers will be required to display the sale and payment prices of goods and services only in euros.
Businesses may, if they wish, continue to show the lev equivalent of products. However, the amount stated in levs will be for informational purposes only. It must be clearly stated that the euro amount is the official price the consumer must pay, and the lev value is only a reference.
Businesses that choose to display both amounts will need to present prices accurately and in a way that does not mislead consumers.
1 EURO = 1.95583 LEVS
The official exchange rate that consumers will use when comparing prices will not change. The fixed rate will continue to be applied as 1 euro = 1.95583 levs.
Converted prices will be rounded according to the rules set in the Euro Adoption Act. In this context, amounts will be calculated to the second decimal place, and the principle will be that consumers should not be put at a disadvantage during conversion.
MENUS AND PRICE LISTS WILL NOT CHANGE IMMEDIATELY
The end of the mandatory dual pricing will not require businesses to change all their printed materials at once.
Menus, price lists, catalogs, and brochures may continue to be used under certain conditions. For this, it must be clearly stated that the euro price is the current amount to be paid, and the lev equivalent is for reference only.
PRICE INCREASES WILL CONTINUE TO BE MONITORED
Although the dual pricing practice ends, measures to protect consumers will continue. Authorities will continue to monitor unfair commercial practices, incorrect currency conversions, and unjustified price increases after August 8.
Thus, as the temporary dual pricing period implemented after the transition to the euro in Bulgaria is completed, the euro will stand out as the sole official price in shopping.
