The Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources is transitioning to a tiered tariff system for natural gas bills. In the new system, which will be implemented as of April 1, average consumption will be based on regional averages. Subscribers whose consumption exceeds 75% of the average will not be eligible for state support.
The Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources is transferring the system applied in electricity bills to natural gas as well. With the model that will come into effect in April, the amount of consumption will be decisive in natural gas bills. The aim is to exclude subscribers who consume a lot and are considered to have a high income level from the support scope.
SEPARATE AVERAGES WILL BE DETERMINED FOR EACH PROVINCE
In the new system, a single limit will not be applied across Turkey. The ministry will determine separate consumption averages for each province, taking into account the climatic conditions. This way, it will prevent citizens living in cold provinces from facing disadvantages.
75% LIMIT WILL BE A CRITICAL THRESHOLD
Subscribers exceeding 75% of the determined average consumption will be excluded from support. For example, if the average consumption in Ankara or Istanbul is calculated as 200 cubic meters during the winter months, those consuming 350 cubic meters or more will not receive state support. In the summer months, since the average is lower, the limit will also be lowered.
19 MILLION SUBSCRIBERS WILL CONTINUE TO RECEIVE SUPPORT
There are approximately 21.8 million natural gas subscribers in Turkey. About 2.8 million subscribers will be affected by the new regulation. The remaining 19 million subscribers will continue to benefit from state support.
THE STATE COVERS 45% OF THE BILL
According to the news from Barış Şimşek of Sabah; in the current system, the state covers approximately 45% of natural gas bills. While a citizen pays 550 lira on a 1,000 lira bill, the remaining 450 lira is covered by the Treasury. With the new model, it is aimed to use this support more targeted.
CONSUMPTION IS HIGHER IN COLD REGIONS
According to data, the highest natural gas consumption occurs in Eastern Anatolia. Last year, the highest consumption per household was measured in Hakkari, while Erzurum, Ardahan, Bitlis, and Van also ranked high. The Aegean and Mediterranean regions remained below average.
HIGH CONSUMPTION WILL BE CONSIDERED A HIGH INCOME INDICATOR
In the new model, subscribers living in large and detached houses who consume a lot will be excluded from the system. The ministry aims to distribute support more fairly by evaluating this group as high-income.
