A tiered pricing system for natural gas bills is being implemented. Different consumption limits will be set for each province, and additional support will be provided to those living in colder regions. This way, the grievances of citizens in provinces with high consumption will be prevented.

The transition to a tiered pricing system for natural gas is planned to take place towards the end of the year. With the cost-based pricing system implemented at the beginning of this year for electricity, residential subscribers with an annual electricity consumption of over 5,000 kilowatt-hours have started to pay the actual cost of electricity, and a similar application is expected to be implemented for natural gas as well.

"NO ONE WILL BE HARMED"

Ali Rıza Öner, President of the Waste Management and Energy from Waste Producers Association, stated that the Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources will also implement the application it started in electricity for natural gas, ensuring that no one is harmed by separating cold and hot cities in natural gas.

THE HIGHEST CONSUMPTION IS IN HAKKARI

Öner noted that approximately 59 out of every 100 households in Turkey use natural gas for heating, cooking, and hot water needs.

He explained that a significant portion of natural gas in households is used for heating, which poses a disadvantage in cities with cold climates. "For this reason, the Ministry aims to determine a separate tier for each province to avoid harming citizens and to differentiate between cold and hot climate provinces," he said.

THE MINISTRY HAS RELEASED ALL DATA ONE BY ONE

According to a report in Türkiye Gazetesi; looking at the latest announced 2023 data, the province with the highest average consumption per household is Hakkâri with 1,401 cubic meters, followed by Erzurum with 1,348 cubic meters, Ardahan with 1,317 cubic meters, Muş with 1,311 cubic meters, and Ağrı with 1,224 cubic meters. The lowest consumption occurred in Adana with 521 cubic meters, Osmaniye with 527 cubic meters, Mersin with 531 cubic meters, and Antalya with 566 cubic meters.

In Istanbul, households consumed an average of 869 cubic meters of gas in a year, while in Ankara it was 1,067 cubic meters, and in Izmir, it was 736 cubic meters. The Ministry stated that by taking all these data into account, it will continue to support those below the average consumption determined for each province while starting to reflect the actual costs to those above it," he added.
