FIFA is preparing to expand the scope of VAR with the 2026 World Cup. Corner and second yellow card decisions will also be reviewed by VAR. Additionally, a "2 minutes off the field" rule for injured players is being tested. If approved, the new system will be implemented starting from 2026.
FIFA is taking significant steps to increase the use of technology in football. According to The Times, the powers of the VAR system will be expanded at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This means that VAR will no longer be limited to classic decisions such as goals, penalties, red cards, and incorrect cards shown to players.
CORNER AND SECOND YELLOW CARD VAR SUPPORT
Under the new model, VAR will also be involved in these two areas:
- Corner decisions: Controversial corner situations, such as whether the ball has completely crossed the line, can be reviewed.
- Second yellow card: The validity of the second yellow card shown to a player can be evaluated by VAR.
If these changes are implemented, referees will be supported technologically in a much broader context for match control.
IF THE SYSTEM IS SUCCESSFUL, IT WILL BE PERMANENT
The new VAR applications will be tested at the 2026 World Cup. If the system proves effective, this expanded version of VAR will be made permanent in all leagues and international tournaments.
2-MINUTE MANDATORY OFF-FIELD TREATMENT RULE
FIFA is also testing a new rule regarding injuries; if a player has not received a yellow or red card for a foul and has stopped the game for injury treatment, they will be required to stay off the field for 2 minutes. This application aims to reduce discussions about "time-wasting due to injury."
RULES MAY COME INTO EFFECT IN 2026
If official approval is granted for these regulations, the new rules will come into effect on June 1, 2026.
