A new regulation is being developed regarding unauthorized passenger transportation. With this regulation, stricter inspections and penalties will be applied to vehicles and individuals providing unauthorized passenger transport services. After the regulation becomes law, the licenses of those engaged in unauthorized passenger transport will be revoked for one year. Instead of addressing the additional taxi demand that is waiting for a solution in Istanbul, the regulation seems to be exacerbating the issue.
Strict measures against pirate transportation are being discussed in the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM). A new legal regulation is coming to increase sanctions against pirate transportation, which has been a topic of discussion in Turkey for a long time. The regulation discussed in the TBMM Commission aims to impose heavier penalties on drivers who carry passengers without permission to prevent pirate transportation.
DRIVER'S LICENSE WILL BE REVOKED
Vehicles used for pirate transportation will be banned from traffic. In addition, under the proposal, drivers engaged in pirate transportation will have their licenses revoked for 6 months on the first offense. If they repeat the same offense within a year, their licenses will be invalid for 1 year. During this period, no new or temporary driver's licenses will be issued to the drivers.
THE PROPOSAL'S LEGALIZATION IS MOST WANTED BY TAXI DRIVERS
The new regulation discussed in the TBMM is most desired by taxi drivers. In recent years, there has been a significant increase in the number of pirate taxis and Uber-style transportation. Martı TAG is seeking legal remedies in this regard while proposing a different passenger transportation system against taxis. Taxi drivers opposing this are also taking a stance in favor of maintaining the current regulation through their legal applications. If the proposal is legalized, amendments will be made to the Highway Traffic Law No. 2918, and penalties for pirate transportation will become more deterrent.
