49-year-old experienced parachute instructor José Lima died while paragliding on Sunday at the Pedra Bonita cliffs in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. In dramatic footage, Lima, a former military personnel, is seen checking his equipment as people gather around him. As his parachute began to open, Lima lost his balance and quickly fell to the ground. In the footage, a woman can be heard saying, "Friends, I'm worried." The lifeless body of former military parachutist Lima was found four hours after authorities were notified. The Rio de Janeiro Civil Police have begun examining the parachute and equipment as part of their investigation. An instructor from the São Conrado Paragliding Club stated in a social media post that Lima did not use the designated launch ramp. "The pilot did not use the ramp. No one knows him, and we do not know the level of his technical knowledge. The launch point he chose is poor and in a restricted area. Our club has no connection to the incident," he said. Club Vice President Bruno Menescal stated that the accident resulted from a "failed" takeoff attempt. "You can question many things, but it is clear that this person did not fully grasp the sport. As a result, he fell from a height of 250 meters and lost his life," he explained. Lima's sister-in-law mentioned that he had just returned from Germany, where he spent some of his time, and that he planned to spend part of the summer with his family in Rio. "We have no idea what happened. However, he had been a professional parachutist for years. He was experienced. It was an accident," she said. Family friends stated that Lima was waiting for a visa to go to Dubai. "No one can accept what happened because he was very experienced. He had nearly 20 years of diving experience and was teaching this sport," they added.
