According to a statement from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the Boeing 737-800 aircraft, which was en route to Texas, was diverted to Denver shortly after taking off from Colorado Springs due to engine vibrations.
The American Airlines flight 1006, carrying 172 passengers and 6 crew members, landed in Denver around 5:15 PM. While taxiing on the runway, the plane's engine suddenly caught fire.
Passengers were evacuated using emergency slides. According to a statement from the airport's social media account, 12 people sustained minor injuries and were taken to the hospital for treatment.
In videos shared on social media, airport fire crews can be seen trying to extinguish the dangerous fire as flames and black smoke engulf the aircraft.
Another video taken from inside the airport shows passengers waiting on the wing of the plane for safety as smoke rises.
The cause of the fire is still unknown. The Federal Aviation Administration has launched an investigation into the incident.
