A sad news has come from the forest fire in the Ödemiş district of İzmir. Ragıp Şahin, a forest worker who was injured and intubated in the fire, has passed away. With Şahin's death, the death toll from the fire has risen to three.

On the evening of July 2, Wednesday, around 21:00, a forest fire that started in the Ödemiş district of İzmir spread to residential areas due to the wind. The neighborhoods of Tosunlar, Suçıktı, Yeniköy, Karadoğan, Işık, Köseler, and Üzümlü in the fire zone were evacuated. In the district engulfed by flames, many houses, as well as vineyards and gardens, were damaged.

In the fire in Ödemiş, 81-year-old bedridden patient İbrahim Erkan lost his life while trapped in the flames. In the same fire, forest worker İbrahim Demir (39), a father of two, also lost his life. Today, another sad news came from the Ödemiş fire, which was brought under control yesterday and where cooling efforts are ongoing.
Forest worker Ragıp Şahin (45), who was fighting the flames, was severely injured while trapped in his pickup truck during his duty. Despite all the interventions at İzmir City Hospital, Şahin could not be saved and became a martyr. It was learned that Şahin, who was married and a father of two, was assigned to the Beydağ Forest Management Directorate and was part of the first response team to reach the area during the fire. Ragıp Şahin, who was trapped in his vehicle due to intense smoke and heat, was rescued as a severely injured person by the medical teams dispatched to the scene.
Upon receiving the sad news of Şahin, who worked tirelessly on the field from the moment the fire started, his relatives were overwhelmed with tears, and Şahin's colleagues also experienced great sorrow. With the martyrdom of Ragıp Şahin, the number of people who lost their lives in the Ödemiş fire rose to 3.
MINISTER YUMAKLI'S CONDOLENCE MESSAGE
A condolence message was published by the Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, İbrahim Yumaklı, for Ragıp Şahin, who was martyred in the fire. In his message, Minister Yumaklı stated, "Our forest worker Ragıp Şahin, who was injured while fighting to protect our Green Homeland in the fire in İzmir Ödemiş, has become a martyr. I pray for mercy for our heroic brother who defended the Green Homeland at the cost of his life, and I wish patience to his family and loved ones. May our forestry community and our esteemed nation be consoled."
