After leaving the dormitory in Van, 21-year-old university student Rojin Kabaiş, who was not heard from again and was later found dead, has seen a new development in the investigation into her death. A second prosecutor has been assigned to the ongoing investigation related to the incident.
The lifeless body of Rojin Kabaiş, a first-year student in the Child Development Department of Van Yüzüncü Yıl University (YYÜ), who went missing after leaving the dormitory on September 27, 2024, was found on October 15 by Mehmet Emin Ankay (60) in the rural Mollakasım neighborhood. According to the autopsy results, the cause of the young girl's death was stated to be drowning.
SECOND PROSECUTOR ASSIGNED TO THE FILE
A second prosecutor has been assigned to the ongoing investigation. The new prosecutor re-interviewed Rojin's father, Nizamettin Kabaiş, along with her mother and three sisters. Nizamettin Kabaiş and his family, who came to the Diyarbakır Courthouse with lawyer Nahit Eren yesterday, gave their statements to the prosecutor via SEGBİS.
FATHER KABAİŞ DESCRIBED HIS STATEMENT
Nizamettin Kabaiş stated that they were contacted by the Van Police Department, saying, "I was told that a new prosecutor was assigned, and that he is the second prosecutor of the case. They said, 'Rojin's mother, her sisters, and her little sister Elif are needed. They wanted four people. They said they should come for a statement, to get to know Rojin. They asked how Rojin was when she was in Van, what she liked, and so on. They called us for that purpose. We went to the Diyarbakır Courthouse. First, the statement of her mother was taken. We were all in one room. We told Mr. Nahit as well. He came as our lawyer. We were all together in the room.
"SHE WAS IN GOOD SPIRITS"
Initially, they started with her mother separately. The prosecutor asked if you had spoken with her. How was Rojin's morale? What was her situation, what did she like? They asked these kinds of questions. Her mother told the prosecutor via SEGBİS that she had left a voice message for Rojin, and Rojin sent her a photo of food along with a tray. This means that I am eating. Then her mother sent another voice message, saying, 'If you are available, call me so we can talk.' They talked upstairs. Then Rojin said she was going to the market to buy coffee. She went to the door of the market. After that, they hung up the phone. Then she talked to her friend. The prosecutor asked about these conversations. The same questions were asked in the statements of her siblings. Her sister said they had spoken a couple of times. She was in good spirits, and she showed Rojin's room and the view during their video calls," he said.
"MY DAUGHTER RETURNED THIS BOOK TO THE LIBRARY 8 MONTHS AGO"
Kabaiş also stated that he provided information about his daughter to the new prosecutor, saying, "I told the prosecutor that after Rojin went missing, I became curious about the claim that she committed suicide after reading the book by Sait Faik Abasıyanık. I went to the library located in Sümerpark in the Yenişehir district to request a list of the books my daughter borrowed. They told me that Rojin had brought home the book by Sait Faik Abasıyanık, among others, 8 months before she went to university. She read it 8 months ago. She brought the books home on February 19, 2024, and returned them on March 13, 2024. Those three books stayed in our house for 24 days. I was curious about this. I told the prosecutor. He said they would look into this as well. Two prosecutors will work together. What happened to our Rojin? Who did what? They should find out the result as soon as possible. Who harmed her? Who is the killer? Why did this happen? Why did it take 4 months? What other questions are we asking? We are not getting answers. Who left that phone there? The reverse current is 24 kilometers; all of these are mysteries," he said.
"HAVING 2 PROSECUTORS RELIEVED ME"
Kabaiş expressed that he felt relieved with the increase in the number of prosecutors handling his daughter's case, saying, "Our new prosecutor has come, and because there are two prosecutors, I felt a bit relieved; it was very good, they are interested, I felt a bit relieved. No one had Rojin's photo; no one was curious. I want this. If there were television channels, lawyers, celebrities, or members of parliament, whoever it may be, I want them to follow Rojin's case. They should also be curious. They should ask what happened to this young student? Who did what? Why did this happen? This responsibility does not fall solely on me. It does not fall solely on the family. Everyone has this duty," he said.
"I AM NOT TARGETING THE STATE"
Kabaiş expressed his sadness over comments on social media suggesting that he is targeting the state, saying, "I took her to the university, I handed her over. I handed her over to the dormitory. They did not take care of her. When I say this, most people misunderstand. They say Nizamettin is targeting the state. He is criticizing the university, criticizing the dormitory. Well, if we do not follow these things, if we do not say these things, how will we find the trace of the killer? What happened to our Rojin, how will we learn? They have imposed bans on everything. They have restricted it. There is confidentiality in the file. What am I asking, what am I curious about, I cannot get a response. What happened to her phone? Who left her lifeless body here? I want to watch the cameras. How has her phone not been resolved for nearly 4 months? I cannot understand that. Even now, part of WhatsApp has not been opened. If it has not been opened, we said that they also said it themselves. If not, we will send it abroad. Send it abroad. Even if it takes a week or 10 days, why does it take 4 months? Is it that difficult to open a phone? They should send the phone to the company. What is inside the phone? Who sent her a message? Who talked to her? Maybe someone planned something for her. At least this should come to light," he stated.
