After the presidential elections held in Cameroon, the votes have started to be counted. It is expected that 92-year-old President Paul Biya, who has been in power for 43 years, will take office for the 8th time. However, the most notable development in the elections was Brenda Biya, the daughter of Biya, calling on social media for people not to vote for her father. Brenda stated, "Do not vote because of what I said, but because of the pain he has caused."
After the presidential elections held yesterday in Cameroon, a country in Central Africa, the votes have started to be counted. The current President Paul Biya, who is 92 years old, is expected to continue his power that he has held for 43 years. Biya, who also holds the title of 'the world's oldest president', will begin his 8th term if he crosses the finish line first.
SURPRISE OPPOSITION FROM HIS DAUGHTER: DON'T VOTE FOR MY FATHER
However, one of the most notable developments of the election was a video shared on social media by Biya's daughter, Brenda Biya. In the video she posted on TikTok, 27-year-old Brenda called for not voting for her father. Brenda said, "Don't vote for him, not because I said so, but because of the pain he has caused."
IT CAUSED A GREAT REACTION
Brenda Biya, who said, "I hope we have another president," stated that she has given up her family and their financial support. Previously in the spotlight for her luxurious lifestyle, Brenda's statement has caused a significant reaction within the country.
ONE OF THE MOST CORRUPT GOVERNMENTS IN THE WORLD
Despite having natural resources such as oil and timber, the majority of the population in Cameroon struggles to live on less than 5 dollars a day. World Bank data shows that the gross domestic product (GDP) is below the level it was when Biya came to power in 1986. Transparency International describes Biya's administration as one of the most corrupt governments in the world.
HE HAS WON ALL ELECTIONS WITH HIGH VOTING RATES
Paul Biya has won all the elections he has participated in with high voting rates. With the constitutional amendment made in 2008, the term limit was removed, allowing Biya to become one of the longest-serving leaders in Africa. Biya, who is competing for his 8th term, will see his new term end just a few months before his 100th birthday.
SECURITY CRISIS IS ALSO GROWING
In addition to economic problems, the security crisis is also growing in Cameroon. Tensions between English and French-speaking communities in the west of the country have turned into conflicts. In the north, the Boko Haram terrorist organization, which spreads from Nigeria, regularly attacks border towns. Criticism is also increasing regarding the Biya government's failure to manage these complex crises.
