Just before the historic Gaza Summit to be held in Egypt, an explosion occurred at a military base in the capital, Cairo. The incident has led to increased security measures in the area, while the cause of the explosion has not yet been determined.
Before the "Gaza Peace Summit," which will be attended by more than 20 world leaders in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, an explosion occurred in the capital Cairo. It was claimed that the explosion took place at a military base.
Eyewitnesses speaking to the Egyptian media reported that the windows of nearby buildings were shattered and the ground shook. No statement has yet been made by Egyptian authorities.
The location of the explosion is a few hours away from the Sharm El Sheikh area where the summit will be held.
EGYPTIAN ARMY INCREASED SECURITY
The Egyptian army had deployed the Russian-made Buk-M2E air defense system around Sharm El Sheikh as part of security measures ahead of the peace summit.
WORLD LEADERS WILL ATTEND THE SUMMIT
The summit, which will address the reconstruction of Gaza and the phases of the ceasefire, will be held in the conference center of the city under the name "Sharm El Sheikh Peace Summit" in the afternoon. The Egyptian official news agency MENA announced the names of those who will attend the Sharm El Sheikh Peace Summit at the level of presidents, kings, and emirs as follows: "Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, U.S. President Donald Trump, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Jordanian King Abdullah II, Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Bahraini King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, French President Emmanuel Macron, and leader of the Greek Cypriot Administration Nikos Christodoulides."
It is expected that Germany, Iraq, England, Italy, Spain, Greece, Armenia, Hungary, Pakistan, Canada, Norway, the United Arab Emirates, and Kuwait will participate in the summit at the prime ministerial level.
MORE THAN 20 LEADERS WILL BE AT THE TABLE
Additionally, it was announced that Oman's Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit, President of the European Council Antonio Costa, Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, and Japan's Ambassador to Cairo Fumio Iwai will also attend the summit.
WHAT HAPPENED?
On October 9, U.S. President Donald Trump announced that in ongoing negotiations in Egypt, Israel and Hamas had approved the first phase of a ceasefire plan in Gaza. While the agreement was signed in Egypt where the negotiations took place, it was activated in the early hours of October 10 with the approval of the Israeli government.
It was announced that the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip came into effect at 12:00 PM on the same day after the Israeli army withdrew to the "yellow line" as specified in the agreement.
During the period from October 8, 2023, until the ceasefire agreement, 67,682 people had lost their lives, and 170,033 people had been injured in the attacks carried out by Israel in the Gaza Strip.
