Ali Eren Somun, who killed his wife Sinem Somun (27) during their divorce process and injured the guard who arrived at the scene, stated in his defense at the court, "I stayed by the sea in Sinop. I was going in and out of the sea. I learned about my wife's death when I was caught."
The incident occurred on July 31, 2025, in the Adacık neighborhood of Beşikdüzü district. Ali Eren Somun, who violated a restraining order against him, climbed in through the back balcony and argued with his wife Sinem Somun, who was in the process of divorce after two years of marriage. As the argument escalated, neighbors who heard the commotion informed the guards outside. In the ensuing struggle, Ali Eren Somun shot his wife with a gun. Sinem Somun, who was shot in the leg and back, lost her life.
HE ALSO INJURED THE GUARD
The fleeing suspect also fired at the neighborhood guard who arrived at the scene. One of the bullets hit guard E.E.'s leg. E.E., who underwent surgery, was discharged after treatment. Sinem Somun, who graduated from Mersin University’s Ship Transportation department and was preparing to start as a captain on the ship she worked on just 10 days after the incident, was buried in Giresun. After the incident, the suspect Ali Eren Somun, who cut his hair, beard, and eyebrows to avoid recognition, was caught in a tent where he was hiding in the forest in Sinop, where he fled on a motorcycle. The suspect was arrested by the judge to whom he was brought at the courthouse.
TRIAL HAS BEGUN
An indictment was filed against the detained defendant for 'premeditated murder of a spouse', 'repeated threats', 'attempting to kill a person due to the public duty he performed', and 'possessing a firearm without a license', seeking aggravated life imprisonment and up to 25 years in prison.
Ali Eren Somun appeared before the judge for the first time at the Trabzon 2nd High Criminal Court. He attended the hearing via the Audio and Visual Information System (SEGBİS) from the prison in Elazığ where he was detained. Sinem's family and the lawyers of the parties were also present at the hearing.
"I STAYED BY THE SEA IN SINOP, I WAS GOING IN AND OUT OF THE SEA"
Describing the incident at the hearing, Ali Eren Somun said, "I definitely had no intention to kill anyone. Even when we were dating, we lived a married life. Her family loved me very much. I didn’t understand what happened; she wanted to divorce me because she promised her relative. She said she had no problems with me. On the day of the incident, Sinem was very drunk. I went home to talk to my wife. I fired a gun into the stairwell. I had no intention to kill. I fled the scene on my motorcycle in fear. Everyone knew me; I cut my hair so that no one would ask me anything about the incident. I stayed by the sea in Sinop. I was going in and out of the sea. I learned about my wife's death when I was caught," he said.
In response to the judge's question regarding his comment on Sinem Somun's social media post stating '132 women were killed in Turkey in 102 days' with '133', Ali Eren Somun replied, "133 is a lucky number. That's why I shared it. If I had enough bullets, I would have written about my dear mother too."
THE GUARD WAS INJURED WHILE TRYING TO HOLD SINEM
Guard E.E., who was injured in the incident, also stated, "On the day of the incident, I arrived at Sinem's house at 10:30 PM. After a while, the neighbors told us there was noise in the house. We heard sounds from inside without ringing the doorbell. Just as Sinem was opening the door, we heard two gunshots. While trying to hold Sinem, who fell to the ground, I was also injured. As Ali Eren was leaving from the balcony, we intervened with Sinem."
Sinem's mother, Derya Topaloğlu, who was given the floor at the hearing, wept and said, "I am complaining until the end."
GRANDMOTHER FAINTED
The court panel, which listened to the witnesses, decided to continue the detention of Ali Eren Somun and postponed the hearing to March 13.
Meanwhile, after the hearing, Sinem's grandmother Gülnaz Topaloğlu fainted at the courthouse exit. Topaloğlu, who was seated on a bench by her relatives, was taken to the hospital by the ambulance that was called. It was reported that Topaloğlu's condition was good after treatment.
