Following the resignation of 91 deputies from the Republican People's Party (CHP) under the leadership of Özgür Özel to establish the New Party, the defections have begun to extend to local administrations. In İzmir, Selçuk Mayor Filiz Ceritoğlu Sengel and all CHP council members have resigned from their party.
The repercussions of the major split in the CHP, which lost its main opposition status in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey, also made themselves felt in Izmir.
Immediately after Özgür Özel opened a new page in politics by signing the founding documents of the New Party, a notable development occurred in the Selçuk Municipality. Selçuk Mayor Filiz Ceritoğlu Sengel, along with the accompanying council members, decided to resign from the CHP. Following this collective resignation move, no council members representing the Republican People's Party remained in the Selçuk Municipal Council.
