After the founding of the new party, Özgür Özel, who visited tradesmen in Trabzon, made a major mistake while trying to emphasize that Fatih Sultan Mehmet grew up in Manisa. Özel's blunder, stating the date of the conquest as 1483, quickly became a hot topic.
Quickly accelerating field work with the establishment of the new party, Özgür Özel, within the scope of his Trabzon program, visited local tradesmen and listened to the citizens' demands. During the visit, Özel, who wanted to touch upon historical figures and cities, did not escape notice for a factual error in his speech.
"HE CONQUERED ISTANBUL IN 1483"
While chatting with tradesmen on the streets of Trabzon, Özgür Özel, mentioning Sultan Mehmet the Conqueror, emphasized the famous sultan's princely period and said, "Sultan Mehmet the Conqueror grew up in Manisa and conquered Istanbul in 1483."
WHAT IS THE HISTORICAL FACT?
Contrary to what Özgür Özel stated, Ottoman Sultan Mehmet the Conqueror conquered Istanbul not in 1483 but on May 29, 1453. The year 1483 corresponds to two years after the death of Sultan Mehmet the Conqueror (1481).
THERE WAS ALSO A POEM GAFFE BEFORE
Özgür Özel, while criticizing President Erdoğan as "ignorant of poetry, uneducated" in a speech he made in Manisa in February 2025, had become a topic on social media by reciting Ziya Gökalp's poem "Asker Duası" (Soldier's Prayer) with incorrect words, which had led to Erdoğan's imprisonment in Siirt in 1997.
