CELEBRATING HIS 72ND ART YEAR
The master actor, who also holds the title of state artist, is celebrating the 72nd year of his artistic life this year. In the 1990s, Dormen was awarded the honorary title of Doctor of Science by Hacettepe University and has received honorary awards at many important festivals.
WHO IS HALDUN DORMEN?
Theater actor and director, playwright, and translator Ahmet Haldun Dormen was born on April 5, 1928, in Mersin.
In 1955, he founded the Dormen Theater. In 1961, he directed "Irma the Street Girl," the first Western musical staged in Turkey. In the 1980s, he staged musicals such as "Hisseli Harikalar Kumpanyası" and "Şen Sazın Bülbülleri," produced by Egemen Bostancı. The play "Lüküs Hayat," which he staged at the Istanbul City Theaters in 1985, continued for 30 years, mostly sold out.
HE STUDIED IN THE USA
He received his theater education at Yale University in the USA, graduating with a master's degree. For two years, he acted and directed in various theaters in the United States. He performed in four plays at the Pasadena Playhouse in Hollywood. Upon returning to Istanbul, he first joined the Small Stage under the direction of Muhsin Ertuğrul and made his debut in front of the Turkish audience in the role of a detective in the play "Cinayet Var." During that time, he opened a 60-seat street theater with young people on Beyoğlu Parmakkapı Street.
STATE ARTIST
Dormen married Betül Mardin, a world-renowned figure in public relations, in 1959, and they had a son named Ömer from this eight-year marriage.
Throughout his life, the artist has won over two hundred and fifty awards; he has taught classes at Istanbul University State Conservatory; he was honored as an honorary Doctor of Science by Hacettepe University; and in 1998, he received the title of State Artist awarded by the Ministry of Culture.
