18.11.2019 23:42

MoU to reinvigorate, expand UN AU relations towards achieving WHO’s 13th General Program of Work, says UN.

The African Union (AU) and the World Health Organization (WHO) on Monday signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on joint commitment to global health, the UN announced in a statement.

"The MoU will reinvigorate, expand and deepen the UN-AU relationship towards achieving the GPW [WHO's 13th General Program of Work] along with the health and development objectives of the African Union," the UN said in the statement.

"Based on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), WHO's 13th General Programme of Work (GPW), 2019-2023, aims to help ensure health care in low, middle- and high-income countries," the statement added.

Meanwhile, WHO said on Twitter: "WHO and the @_AfricanUnion have committed to working together 1 to support the African Medicines Agency 2 to strengthen collaboration between the @AfricaCDC and WHO, focusing on emergency preparedness 3 to implement the Addis Ababa Call to Action on #HealthForAll."

"The Addis Ababa Call to Action is a powerful commitment from African Union leaders to increase domestic financing for health, and to hold themselves accountable for that commitment," WHO's Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus was "ed by the UN statement as saying. -
