The funeral of the vocal artist Ayşe Şan, who passed away on December 18, 1996, in İzmir, was brought to her hometown 29 years after her death, upon her request, organized by the Diyarbakır Metropolitan Municipality.
Şan's remains were welcomed at Diyarbakır Airport by her son Murat Kerse (56), her grandson Serhat Eren, a member of parliament from the DEM Party in Diyarbakır, and the co-mayors of the Metropolitan Municipality, Serra Bucak and Doğan Hatun.
The funeral of Ayşe Şan, carried by women, was buried in the family cemetery at the Yeniköy Asri Cemetery in the Bağlar district. Murat Kerse stated, "It is pleasing that my mother has come here after 29 years. Everyone in the Southeast loved my mother. This should have happened earlier. There is nothing more natural than an artist returning to their homeland. This is the most natural thing. We were a bit late. Perhaps the fault is ours. From now on, my mother is entrusted to you. We did not face any difficulties with any state institutions or mayors."
