The Constitutional Court of Romania approved the decision of President Klaus Iohannis, who announced his resignation on February 10 to overcome the ongoing political crisis following the annulment of the first round results of the presidential election held on November 24, 2024.
"TAKE GOOD CARE OF ROMANIA"
According to the country's constitution, Senate President Bolojan will serve as the interim president until the new presidential election to be held on May 4. During the handover ceremony at the Cotroceni Palace in Bucharest, Iohannis, who transferred the presidential duties to Bolojan, stated, "Take good care of Romania."
WHAT HAPPENED?
In the first round of the presidential election held on November 24, 2024, independent candidate Calin Georgescu, who is against the West and NATO, received 22.95% of the votes and came in first, while Elena Lasconi from the center-right Save Romania Union Party received 19.17% of the votes and advanced to the second round.
As a result of objections, the Romanian Constitutional Court annulled the first round of the presidential election. Georgescu appealed the annulment decision, and both the Bucharest Court of Appeals and then the Romanian High Court ruled that the decision to annul the presidential election was valid. Voters will go to the polls on May 4 for the first round and on May 18 for the second round to determine the new president.
