It was claimed that Manisa Deputy Selma Aliye Kavaf, whom Özel personally invited to CHP and pinned a party badge on, backed out of joining the New Party at the last moment and would instead join AK Party.

The transfer of Manisa Deputy Selma Aliye Kavaf, who joined CHP ranks after leaving DEVA Party upon Özgür Özel's invitation as a fellow townsman, had sparked controversy within the party. Kavaf, a former Minister of State responsible for Women and Family, had faced criticism from CHP Women's Branches and some internal party organizations due to her past statements and tenure at the Ministry of Family. However, Özel personally pinned the badge on his fellow townsman, weathering all reactions from the party.
