Following the 6.2 magnitude earthquake in Istanbul, experts made a series of statements. Prof. Dr. Sözbilir noted that the earthquake occurred on the North Anatolian Fault and that a part of the fault had ruptured. Prof. Dr. Tüysüz expressed that the likelihood of triggering a larger tremor is low. Prof. Dr. Ahmet Ercan stated that this earthquake could be a precursor to a major Istanbul earthquake.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2 occurred in the Sea of Marmara. The tremor brought citizens out into the streets not only in Istanbul but also in Izmir, Balıkesir, Çanakkale, and Uşak.
According to the data from the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), the tremor, which had its epicenter in the Sea of Marmara, in the Silivri district of Istanbul, was felt in surrounding provinces as well. After the earthquake, citizens poured into the streets across the city. They gathered in parks and open areas.
In Bağcılar, citizens came to the Bağcılar National Garden after the earthquake. In Beşiktaş Bebek, citizens in nearby shops and cafes rushed outside due to the earthquake's impact. People called their relatives on their mobile phones. Passengers and employees at Istanbul Airport also panicked and went outside. Employees in hotels and businesses in Taksim Square began to wait in the square after the earthquake.
Citizens continue to wait in the streets.
PROF. DR. SÖZBİLİR: ONLY A PART OF THE FAULT BROKE, WE GOT OFF CHEAP
Evaluating the earthquake, Prof. Dr. Hasan Sözbilir, Director of the Earthquake Research and Application Center (DAUM) at İzmir's Dokuz Eylul University, and a faculty member in the Department of Geological Engineering, said, "There may be loss of life or property. Teams have started scanning. Considering the intensity of the earthquake, we do not expect a tsunami effect. Aftershocks are a good thing. The earthquake occurred on the North Anatolian Fault. Not the entire fault, but a part of it broke. We will better understand how much of the fault broke from where in light of the information coming in a few hours later. We got off cheap, get well soon," he said.
PROF. DR. TÜYSÜZ: WE NEED TO BE CAREFUL
Prof. Dr. Okan Tüysüz stated, "A 3.9 magnitude earthquake just occurred off Silivri; it was a precursor. It needs to be monitored. If smaller earthquakes occur, they could be aftershocks. At this stage, nothing can be said very clearly. We need to be careful. The probability of this magnitude earthquake triggering a larger one is low. A magnitude 5 earthquake can be expected following this one. It started with a precursor of 4, continued with 6. After that, 5 and smaller earthquakes are possible."
AHMET ERCAN: A PRECURSOR EARTHQUAKE
Prof. Dr. Ahmet Ercan also stated that there would be earthquakes of magnitudes 4.5, 5, and 5.5 before the big Istanbul earthquake, and that this earthquake is one of those. Ercan said he does not expect the Big Istanbul Earthquake to happen from today to tomorrow, but added, "But it will happen."
ÜŞÜMEZSOY: EARTHQUAKES IN MARMARA HAVE ENDED
Prof. Dr. Şener Üşümezsoy, who said 20 days ago, "There may be an earthquake of 6.0-6.5 magnitude in Silivri," stated, "There is no other earthquake risk. Earthquakes in Marmara have ended."
