Seismologist Prof. Dr. Osman Bektaş, who stated that the common perception that the Eastern Black Sea coast does not produce earthquakes does not reflect the truth, emphasized that the region is not completely tectonically passive. Bektaş pointed out that even small and medium-sized earthquakes could cause serious damage due to ground and structural conditions.
Former Karadeniz Technical University faculty member Prof. Dr. Osman Bektaş put an end to a long-standing perception with his statement on seismicity in the Eastern Black Sea region. Bektaş stated that the perception frequently expressed in public that "the Eastern Black Sea coast does not produce earthquakes" is not correct.
Pointing to the data from the Kandilli Observatory, Bektaş noted that earthquakes of magnitude 3 and above are commonly observed in the coastal area. He said this indicates that the region is not completely tectonically passive and that the Earth's crust is under stress.
"RISK IS NOT JUST ABOUT EARTHQUAKE MAGNITUDE"
Bektaş emphasized that earthquake risk should not be evaluated solely based on magnitude. He noted that especially fill areas, loose alluvial soils, and slope movements can increase damage even in small and medium-sized earthquakes.
Highlighting the geomorphological structure of the region, Bektaş expressed that in the Eastern Black Sea, where the mountains continue to rise, coastal slopes can slide down more quickly. He stated that this directly affects ground safety.
"THE MAIN ISSUE IS SCIENTIFIC PLANNING"
Prof. Dr. Osman Bektaş emphasized the vital importance of ground quality and structural strength, pointing to the necessity of scientific planning. Bektaş stated that the reality of earthquakes should not be ignored and that it is important to create construction policies considering regional characteristics.
Noting that the perception of "it does not produce earthquakes" in the public could lead to complacency, Bektaş expressed that the earthquake risk along the Eastern Black Sea coasts should be taken seriously.
