In Izmir's Torbali district, Mert Avcı, who allegedly killed his mother, father, and older brother and staged it as a suicide, denied the accusations in court, saying, "I absolutely did not do such a thing. I don't understand how the incident was attributed to me."
In the Torbalı district of Izmir, Mert Avcı (31), the detained defendant accused of killing his mother Hatice Avcı (54), father Şadi Avcı (67), and brother Mehmet Avcı (32) and attempting to make it appear as a suicide, said, "They are my mother, father, and brother. I don't understand how this is being pinned on me. I absolutely did not do such a thing."
POLICE ENTERING THE HOME FOUND THREE LIFELESS BODIES The incident occurred on October 24, 2025, in an apartment on 3663rd Street in the Muratbey neighborhood of Torbalı district. Relatives, unable to reach the couple Hatice and Şadi Avcı and their child Mehmet Avcı, notified the police. Upon the report, police teams arriving at the address entered the home with a locksmith's help and found the Avcı couple and their son Mehmet shot with a pistol.
Health teams determined that all three had lost their lives. According to initial assessments, it was evaluated that Mehmet Avcı shot his mother Hatice and father Şadi Avcı with a pistol and then committed suicide.
THE FAMILY'S YOUNGEST SON TURNS OUT TO BE THE KILLER In the investigation led by the Torbalı Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, a special team consisting of personnel from the Homicide Bureau and the Crime Analysis Bureau was established to shed light on the incident. Homicide detectives found the family's youngest son's situation suspicious. All his movements before and after the incident were scrutinized. It was also determined that fingerprints on the pistol found at the scene had been wiped clean. Based on camera footage from the time of the incident, phone signals, and obtained evidence, the police determined that the murders were committed by the youngest son of the Şadi and Hatice Avcı couple, Mert Avcı.
It emerged that Avcı had procured cologne, cotton, and gloves before the incident and tried to stage the murders as if his brother had killed their parents and then committed suicide. Police also detained Mert Avcı, his wife S.A. (31), and his brother-in-law T.B. (28). After police procedures, among the three suspects referred to the courthouse, Mert Avcı was arrested, while the others were released.
BEING TRIED FOR THREE AGGRAVATED LIFE SENTENCES After the investigation was completed, an indictment was prepared. Avcı was charged with three counts of aggravated life imprisonment for 'Premeditated intentional killing' of his mother, father, and brother, and up to 3 years in prison for violating 'Law No. 6136 on Firearms, Knives, and Other Tools'.
At the second hearing at the Torbalı Heavy Penal Court, detained defendant Mert Avcı, plaintiffs, and lawyers attended.
A DEFENSE THAT STUNS THE MIND The detained defendant, who did not make a defense at the first hearing, gave his defense this time. Stating that he came to his family's home because of issues with his wife, Avcı said, "I earned money from a virtual game, and my wife did not approve of it. That's why we argued. I had no debt at the time of the incident. An acquaintance of mine was making money with Bitcoin, and money transfers went through my bank account. This business failed. Therefore, people, including illegal individuals, held me responsible. I cannot share my wife's and child's names because I don't think they are safe."
Denying the allegations against him, Avcı stated, "I bought the cologne and cotton because my wife asked for them, and the gloves to pick olives. They are my mother, father, and brother. I don't understand how this is being pinned on me. I absolutely did not do such a thing. I also don't think my brother did it. I didn't even do target practice in the military. My internet search history was for putting babies to sleep."
WIFE REFUTES COLOGNE CLAIM At the hearing, Avcı's wife S.A. was heard as a witness. S.A. said, "In the past, he sold our car without my knowledge. I thought he was up to something again without telling me. Last April, I learned he had debt. His family sold the house and paid off the debts. Also, I had not asked for cologne and cotton."
HEARING ADJOURNED After the defense statements, the interim decision was announced. The panel, deciding to continue Mert Avcı's detention, ruled to complete the deficiencies in the file and adjourned the hearing.
