Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, who conveyed that U.S. President Donald Trump does not rule out the possibility of using military force regarding Greenland, said, "We would not hesitate to do the same. This would be a natural consequence of what the U.S. President has said or has not said." Frederiksen's remarks further escalated tensions along the Washington–Copenhagen line.

"WE ARE CLOSELY MONITORING THE THREATS"

Speaking in the capital Copenhagen, Frederiksen stated that they are carefully watching Trump's statements about "taking over" Greenland. Emphasizing that the U.S. President's failure to rule out the military option poses a serious security risk for Denmark, Frederiksen said they would not shy away from responding to a possible intervention.

MILITARY ACTIVITY IN GREENLAND IS INCREASING

Frederiksen noted that military training and activities in Greenland have been increased, expressing that this situation is part of a long-term process carried out under NATO's Arctic Resilience Operation. Although Denmark emphasizes that its presence in the region is for defense purposes, developments are increasing geopolitical tension.

TRUMP: WE NEED GREENLAND FOR NATIONAL SECURITY

U.S. President Donald Trump previously stated that Greenland is vital for the national security of the U.S., mentioning that the region is critical for the "Iron Dome" defense system. Despite discussions among the foreign ministers of the U.S., Denmark, and Greenland in Washington, it was noted that fundamental disagreements persist.

GREENLAND REJECTED SOVEREIGNTY TRANSFER PROPOSALS

Greenland, an autonomous region of the Kingdom of Denmark, had previously clearly rejected all approaches from the U.S. that included the transfer of sovereignty. Recently, Denmark had called for increasing military cooperation in the region with its allies.

EUROPEAN COUNTRIES ARE SENDING TROOPS

As part of this call, some European countries had announced that they would send small military units and officers to Greenland. Following these developments, Trump announced that customs duties would be imposed on 8 European countries that he claimed opposed the U.S. regarding Greenland.

CUSTOMS DUTY THREAT

Trump had announced that a 10% customs duty would be applied to Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland starting from February 1, and a 25% customs duty would be applied after June 1. The U.S. President stated that this rate would remain in effect until an agreement is reached for the "complete and total" purchase of Greenland.
