The European Parliament has suspended the approval process for the EU-US trade agreement due to the US's stance on Greenland and tariff practices. The International Trade Committee decided to suspend work on the agreement due to threats to Europe's security.

The European Parliament (EP) suspended the approval process of the trade agreement reached between the European Union (EU) and the United States (US) in July 2025, following the announcement that tariffs would be imposed on some European countries due to US President Donald Trump's stance on Greenland.

THE APPROVAL PROCESS OF THE TRADE AGREEMENT WITH THE US HAS BEEN SUSPENDED

Bernd Lange, the Chairman of the EP International Trade Committee, stated in a post on the social media account of the US-based company X that the EP has officially suspended the EU-US trade agreement indefinitely.

"WE HAD NO OTHER OPTION DUE TO THREATS TOWARDS GREENLAND"

Lange indicated that the International Trade Committee decided to freeze its work on the EU-US agreement, saying, "Our sovereignty and territorial integrity are at risk. It is impossible to continue doing business as usual. Given the ongoing and increasing threats towards Greenland and Denmark, as well as our allies in Europe, especially the threats of tariffs, we had no choice but to suspend work on the agreement."

The legal text regarding the EU-US agreement fell under the jurisdiction of the International Trade Committee for negotiation with member countries through the EP process.

The leaders of the European People's Party (EPP), Socialists and Democrats (S&D), and Renew Europe in the EP also reacted to Trump's statements regarding Greenland and the decision to impose additional tariffs on 8 European countries, stating that the approval of the agreement reached in this process was not possible.

EU-US TRADE AGREEMENT

Trump announced that they had completed trade agreement negotiations with the EU after his meeting with EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Scotland in July 2025, stating that under the agreement, EU countries agreed not to impose customs tariffs on US products, while the US would impose a 15% tariff on EU products.

To bring this agreement into effect, approval from the EP was required.
