The Social Security Institution (SGK) announced that unregistered employment causes many loss of rights for employees, from retirement to healthcare services. It was stated that individuals working without insurance are deprived of fundamental rights such as severance pay, unemployment benefits, and health insurance, and citizens were called upon to check their insurance status via e-Government and ALO 170.

As of the day employees start work in Turkey, it is a legal obligation to notify the Social Security Institution and ensure their insurance is arranged, while inspections continue as part of the fight against unregistered employment. The SSI highlighted that unregistered work leads to serious consequences for employees, employers, and the state.

STRIKING STATEMENT FROM THE SSI

Within the scope of Social Security Week, a press release signed by Harun Sertbaş, the Istanbul Provincial Director of the Social Security Institution, emphasized the harms of unregistered employment.

The release stated, "Unregistered employment causes multifaceted negative effects on the social and economic values of society, leading to serious consequences for employees, employers, and the state."

WHAT DO UNREGISTERED WORKERS LOSE?

The release also listed the rights that unregistered workers may lose one by one.

Accordingly, uninsured workers:

  • Are deprived of the right to retirement.
  • Cannot receive a disability pension in case of incapacity.
  • In the event of death, their families cannot benefit from a survivor's pension.
  • Cannot receive unemployment insurance support when unemployed.
  • May face issues accessing healthcare services.
  • May have to pay General Health Insurance premiums out of their own pocket.
  • Lack protections against work accidents and occupational diseases.

"PERSONAL RIGHTS ARE ALSO LOST"

In the SSI's statement, it was noted that unregistered work not only eliminates social security rights but also the fundamental rights provided by labor legislation. It was stated that rights such as severance pay, notice pay, annual paid leave, weekly holiday, and maternity leave are at risk. Additionally, it was highlighted that the likelihood of employees working in insecure conditions and with low wages increases.

HOW CAN EMPLOYEES CHECK THEIR INSURANCE?

The methods by which employees can learn whether their insurance is made or at what wage they are reported were also explained.

Accordingly, employees can:

  • Obtain information through the e-Government system,
  • By calling ALO 170 Labor and Social Security Communication Center,
  • By applying to SSI provincial directorates and social security centers.

HOW ARE COMPLAINTS MADE?

It was stated that employees who believe they are working uninsured or that insufficient wages and days are reported can submit their complaints via:

  • ALO 170,
  • SSI Provincial Directorates and Centers,
  • CİMER.

INSPECTIONS CONTINUE

Meanwhile, it was reported that inspectors of the Social Security Institution continue their examinations and inspections as part of the fight against unregistered employment. It was stated that many irregularities have been detected through citizen reports, on-site inspections, and electronic audits.
