Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya made statements at the opening ceremony of the MOTOBIKE Istanbul 2025 Fair held at the Istanbul Fair Center.

Stating that they are trying to ensure the peace of the country with 675,000 personnel across Turkey, Yerlikaya expressed that they are also working on ensuring peace in traffic. He emphasized that they are present in every area from education to inspection, and noted that there are 31.3 million motor vehicles and 6.3 million motorcycles in Turkey.

THE NUMBER OF MOTORCYCLES REACHED 6.3 MILLION

Addressing motorcycle riders for traffic safety, Yerlikaya said, "The number of motorcycles, which was 3.3 million in 2019, has reached 6.3 million in 2024. We closed the total number of motor vehicles at 31.3 million in 2024, 20% of which, or one in five vehicles, are two-wheeled, that is, motorcycles."

Yerlikaya stated that the number of motorcycles in the country increased by 1 million to 5.1 million in 2023 compared to 2022, and by 1.2 million to 6.3 million in 2024.

DRIVER'S LICENSE IS REVOKED FOR 60 DAYS AFTER 9 VIOLATIONS

Yerlikaya also touched on the penalties requested for those who violate red lights, stating, "A fine of 2,167 lira was applied to those who pass a red light. It is stated that 'if three violations occur within a year, the driver's license is revoked for 30 days; if six violations occur, for 45 days; and if nine violations occur, for 60 days.'

In our draft regarding deterrence, we propose that the penalty for passing a red light be 5,000 for the first offense, 10,000 for the second, 15,000 for the third, and a 30-day driver's license suspension; 20,000 and 60 days for the fourth; 30,000 and 90 days for the fifth; and if it happens for the sixth time within a year, the license will be revoked, with a fine of 80,000 lira. Moreover, we send them to an eye doctor for an examination. In the year 2025, if we conduct a measurement regarding not stopping at red lights, we want to test this self-confidence in this way. If it happens six times in a year, we take their license, and they have to go get their license from scratch."
