The Istanbul Governorship announced that face-to-face education will be suspended for one day in all educational institutions on Monday, January 12, due to adverse weather conditions expected to be effective throughout Istanbul. Some public employees will also be considered on administrative leave.
It was announced that education has been suspended for one day due to the expected heavy snowfall and adverse weather conditions in Istanbul.
According to the information provided by the meteorology, it is stated that the cold and rainy weather will increase its effect across the country; snowfall is also expected in Istanbul.
EDUCATION HAS BEEN SUSPENDED According to the data, with the decision taken by the Istanbul Governorship, face-to-face education will not be conducted in all educational institutions across the province on Monday, January 12, 2026.
Within the scope of the decision taken; in addition to public and private schools, public education centers, maturation institutes, private teaching courses, motor vehicle driver courses, various courses, special education and rehabilitation centers, as well as support and training courses in public schools and supplementary courses in private schools have also been included in the holiday scope.
Moreover, veterans, disabled veterans, disabled personnel, pregnant employees, and female personnel with children under 8 years old working in public institutions and organizations will also be considered on administrative leave. However, female personnel with children under 8 years old working in health, security, and snow removal units are excluded from this scope.
Additionally, mothers with disabled children under the age of 8 will be on administrative leave on the specified date, regardless of their profession.
STATEMENT FROM THE GOVERNOR'S OFFICE The statement from the Istanbul Governorship regarding the issue is as follows: "Due to the expected adverse weather conditions according to meteorological data on Monday, January 12, 2026, all educational institutions, including all public-private schools, public education centers, maturation institutes, private teaching courses, motor vehicle driver courses, various courses, special education and rehabilitation centers, support and training courses in public schools, and supplementary courses in private schools, will suspend face-to-face education activities for one (1) day on January 12, 2026."
Additionally, female personnel working in public institutions and organizations who are veterans, disabled veterans, disabled, pregnant, and have children under 8 years old will also be considered on administrative leave. However, the group of 'female personnel with children under 8 years old' does not include female personnel working in our units engaged in health, security, and snow removal. Mothers with disabled children under the age of 8, regardless of their profession, will also be considered on administrative leave on the specified date."
WARNING FROM AKOM The General Directorate of Meteorology (MGM) issued a warning for heavy snowfall in 55 provinces for Monday and Tuesday. Among the cities where snowfall is expected are Istanbul and Ankara, while AKOM announced that snowfall in the city will begin at 06:00 tomorrow morning. Meteorology expert Prof. Dr. Orhan Şen stated, "It is beneficial for schools to be closed. There may be chaos. It will suddenly hit. It seems like it will turn into a bit of a white disaster.
