Generally, the price of eggs decreases during the summer months, but as winter approaches, it is now on the agenda with price hikes. In the last two weeks, the price increases for eggs across Turkey have approached 30%. The average price of an egg has become 8 lira. Consumers are shocked by the exorbitant increase.
The rumors of "bird flu outbreak everywhere" have led to consecutive price hikes within two weeks, raising the price per egg. With two consecutive price increases for eggs, a 30% increase per carton has been reflected on supermarket shelves.
THE PRICE OF AN EGG HAS BECOME 8 LIRA
Producers sell eggs for an average of 3.60-3.70 TL. However, these prices are multiplied as they reach consumers on supermarket shelves and markets. Even the cheapest 30-egg carton prices have risen to 140 TL. The carton of eggs, which was 200 lira before the price increase, has risen to 260 lira. Accordingly, the price of a single egg varies between 8 lira and 9 lira.
Experts are calling on consumers to report any abnormal price increases they observe in the products they purchase to the Ministry of Trade. Complaints can be made through e-Government or the ALO 175 Consumer Line.
Additionally, consumers need to pay attention to the numbers written on the packaging when buying eggs. Eggs labeled "0" and "1" come from organic or free-range chickens, while the cheapest "3" numbered eggs are obtained from cage systems.
"THERE IS NO PROBLEM IN PRODUCTION"
YUM-BİR President İbrahim Afyon states that egg production continues smoothly in the country and that production is at a level to meet domestic market needs.
In egg production, feed constitutes 75% of the costs. In addition, expenses such as chicken medicines, electricity, and labor also affect prices. However, the significant difference between producer and supermarket prices is striking. It is believed that intermediaries and supermarkets manipulate prices.
