Bad news came to Fernando Muslera, who earned the title of the Uruguayan footballer with the most appearances in the tournament's history in Uruguay. The Uruguay Football Federation's application for a 'legacy' logo for Fernando Muslera before the match was denied.

In the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Uruguay drew 1-1 with Saudi Arabia, and goalkeeper Fernando Muslera made history by becoming the Uruguayan footballer with the most appearances in the tournament's history, with 17 matches.

MUSLERA IS THE SOLE RECORD HOLDER

The experienced goalkeeper left behind legendary names such as Diego Godin (14), Luis Suarez (13), Edinson Cavani (13), Jose Maria Gimenez (13), and Maximiliano Pereira (13) to become the sole record holder.

MUSLERA'S APPLICATION TO FIFA

Following this historic achievement, the Uruguayan Football Federation (AUF) made a special application to FIFA to crown the success of the veteran goalkeeper, who has been part of the squad for five different World Cup tournaments. The federation requested that Muslera wear the special 'legacy' logo given to footballers who have participated in five World Cups on his jersey.

COULD NOT MEET THE CONDITIONS

However, the Uruguayan Football Federation's request hit a FIFA roadblock. Reviewing the application, FIFA ruled that Muslera did not meet the required criteria to receive this title and rejected the request. The reason for FIFA's rejection was the 2022 Qatar World Cup. In that tournament, then-manager Diego Alonso gave Sergio Rochet a chance in goal throughout the competition, and while Muslera was in the squad, he did not play in any matches. According to FIFA rules, it was emphasized that being in the tournament squad was not sufficient for the 'legacy' logo, and the player must have stepped onto the field. Thus, although Fernando Muslera attended five World Cup tournaments, as he did not actually play in five different tournaments, he could not earn the right to wear this special logo.
