Dr. Saurabh Sethi, a gastroenterologist and Stanford University graduate, warned that the unconscious use of seeds such as chia, flaxseed, and pumpkin seeds, which have recently become popular, can lead to digestive issues. Dr. Sethi emphasized that seeds should be consumed ground and with sufficient water, noting that excessive amounts can harm intestinal health.
Recently gaining popularity and becoming a part of many meals, the benefits of seeds such as chia, flaxseed, and pumpkin seeds are frequently discussed. Stanford graduate Gastroenterologist Dr. Saurabh Sethi made important warnings about the correct consumption of these seeds through his Instagram account.
Dr. Sethi emphasized the importance of consciously using seeds, stating that excessive or incorrect use can lead to digestive system issues and even nutrient absorption problems.
Seeds Should Be Consumed Ground
Dr. Sethi first noted that each type of seed has different fibers, fats, and benefits, and therefore they should not be used interchangeably at random. He emphasized the importance of consumption based on needs.
One of the most important warnings was that seeds should not be consumed whole. Dr. Sethi stated that seeds eaten without being ground are not fully absorbed in the digestive system, and their benefits cannot be utilized.
Absorbs Water, Causes Bloating
Pointing out one of the common mistakes, Dr. Sethi said that consuming dry seeds sprinkled in bowls is risky. The expert noted that seeds absorb a lot of water and, if not consumed with water or liquid, they will draw water from the stomach and intestines, which can lead to bloating and digestive difficulties.
Dr. Sethi also mentioned that the amount consumed is important. He noted that the amount sprinkled in bowls can sometimes be insufficient, but consuming more than 1-2 tablespoons is also not healthy. Additionally, he stated that chia seeds are the best option for omega-3 and emphasized the need to distinguish them from basil seeds, which are often confused.
Dr. Sethi reminded that seeds can spoil and should be stored under appropriate conditions, warning against the misconception of viewing seeds as low-calorie. He stated that excessive consumption can seriously harm intestinal health, but when used correctly, these seeds can greatly benefit digestion by nourishing the good bacteria in the intestines.
