Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stated that if there is no rainfall in Tehran, water cuts will be implemented next month, and in a serious situation, the city may be evacuated.

The President of Iran, Masoud Pezeshkian, stated that if there is no rainfall in the capital Tehran in the near future, the city will face water shortages starting next month, and if this is insufficient, they will have to evacuate Tehran.

According to a report by the Etimad newspaper, Pezeshkian, during a meeting he attended while visiting the city of Sanandaj in the west of the country, pointed out various economic and social problems in the country. He mentioned that the current issues, including high prices and inflation, are a result of both wrong measures taken within the country and are related to sanctions. Pezeshkian stated, "High prices and inflation are the fault of the Parliament and the government. There are efforts, but projects are left incomplete due to limited financial resources."

Pezeshkian addressed the water crisis caused by drought in Iran, stating, "Iran is currently facing natural crises such as insufficient rainfall and water resources, and these crises can have serious consequences."

"WE WILL HAVE TO EVACUATE TEHRAN"

Emphasizing the need for savings in water and energy usage and better management, Pezeshkian pointed out that the water problem in Tehran is alarming. He said, "If it doesn't rain, we will have to impose water restrictions in Tehran starting next month. If it doesn't rain after that, we will run out of water and will have to evacuate Tehran."

WATER CRISIS IN TEHRAN

Tehran is supplied with water by five dams, the largest of which is the Karaj Dam, including Lar, Mamlu, Karaj, Talikan, and Latyan. There has been a significant decrease in rainfall across Iran over the past five years. Data from meteorological institutions show that this year, rainfall in Tehran is approximately 40% less than seasonal averages. The almost complete lack of rainfall, especially in the spring and summer months, has led to a decrease in reservoir levels in the dams. This situation has caused a significant drop not only in surface water but also in underground water reserves.

The Tehran Provincial Water Authority warned on July 20 that the reservoir levels in the dams supplying water to Tehran have reached the lowest levels in the last century due to the drought experienced in Iran over the past five years. There have been occasional water cuts in the city during the summer.

President Pezeshkian stated in a statement on July 23 that if the current pace of water scarcity in Tehran continues and no solutions are produced, it will become impossible to deliver water to the public.

Tehran Water Authority General Director Behzad Parsa also warned in a statement on November 3 that the dam reserves could provide water to Tehran for a maximum of two more weeks.
