The audacious thief said, 'They owed me money, so I stole it,' but it turned out he had never met the store owner in his life. Some of the stolen items were found and returned to the store owner. The store owner stated that he had suffered a loss of approximately 1 million lira.
In the Çukurova district of Adana, suspect Hayri A. (45), who broke the window of a jewelry store with a stone, crawled inside, and pulled off a heist worth 1 million lira, was caught red-handed by police teams. In his statement at the police station, he defended himself by saying "They owed me money, that's why I stole it," but it turned out that the suspect had no acquaintance with the store owner at all.
ROBBED IN SECONDS
The incident occurred around 01:30 at night at a jewelry store on Turgut Özal Boulevard. Identified Hayri A. broke the glass door of the targeted workplace with a stone, creating an opening at the bottom. The suspect crawled through the opening, filled his clothes with numerous gold and silver-plated bracelets displayed in the window, and disappeared. The theft was captured second by second on the store's security cameras.
"DEBT" EXCUSE TURNED OUT TO BE FALSE
Upon the report, teams from the Provincial Police Department's Theft and Pickpocketing Bureau went into action, examined camera recordings, and quickly caught and detained suspect Hayri A. Some of the stolen items were recovered and handed over to store owner Ebru Mintemur.
In his police interrogation, Hayri A. confessed to the crime but allegedly made an absurd claim: "They owed me money, so I broke in and stole." However, an in-depth investigation by the police determined that the suspect and the store owner definitely did not know each other.
"I HAVE 1 MILLION LIRA IN DAMAGES"
Store owner Ebru Mintemur, who learned of the robbery through a phone call at night, expressed her distress: "The suspect stole almost all the gold-plated bracelets and silver items from the display. Thanks to our police, some of the items were found and returned to us, but we still have about 1 million lira in damages."
Suspect Hayri A. was referred to the courthouse after his police procedures.
