A verdict has been reached in the case of the defendant, who was sentenced to 18 years in prison after killing his brother-in-law with a gun following an assault in Kayseri and then ran over him with a car. The defendant's sentence has been reduced to 15 years, but the 1 year and 6 months prison sentence for carrying an unlicensed firearm remains unchanged.
After killing his brother-in-law S.T., who assaulted him in the middle of the street in Kayseri, with a gun, Y.K. was sentenced to 18 years in prison for 'intentional manslaughter under severe provocation' and 1 year and 6 months for carrying an unlicensed firearm at the trial held at the Kayseri 2nd Heavy Penal Court.
FIRED BULLETS AND RAN OVER HIM WITH A CAR, SENTENCE REDUCED TO 15 YEARS
After the 18-year prison sentence given with the 'unjust provocation' reduction was overturned by the Kayseri Regional Court of Appeal on the grounds that the sentence was excessive, Y.K. was retried at the Kayseri 2nd Heavy Penal Court. The trial was attended by the detained defendant Y.K. and the lawyers of the parties. In his defense, Y.K. expressed regret over the incident, stating that it developed suddenly. S.T.'s lawyer requested that the unjust provocation reduction not be applied, stating that Y.K. fired two magazines of bullets and then ran over the victim with a car.
As a result of the trial conducted by the court panel, the 18-year prison sentence given to Y.K. for 'intentional manslaughter under unjust provocation' was reduced to 15 years. There was no change in the 1 year and 6 months prison sentence given for 'carrying an unlicensed firearm.'
BACKGROUND OF THE INCIDENT
On March 3, 2024, an incident occurred on Gaffar Okkan Boulevard in the Mimarsinan Şirintepe neighborhood of the Melikgazi district, where a dispute broke out between Y.K. and his brother-in-law S.T. (45), who allegedly had a prior feud for an unknown reason. As the argument escalated, S.T. assaulted his brother-in-law Y.K. After the assault, Y.K. fired at S.T. with the gun he had with him. After firing bullets at his brother-in-law, Y.K. then ran over S.T. with a vehicle and fled. While police teams took extensive security measures in the area, health teams determined that S.T. had lost his life during their examination. Following the incident, Y.K., who fled, was caught shortly after due to the efforts of the police teams.
